When American homeowners research energy-efficient windows, they encounter two main standards: ENERGY STAR and Passive House. These programs have very different origins, requirements, and practical implications. Understanding the difference helps you make the right specification decision — and understand where VEKA and Schüco windows fit within (and beyond) both systems.

1. ENERGY STAR: America's Baseline
ENERGY STAR is a US government program administered by the EPA that certifies products meeting minimum energy efficiency thresholds. For windows, ENERGY STAR uses a climate zone system across the continental US with different U-factor and Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) requirements for each zone:

Note: these are US U-factor units (BTU/hr·ft²·°F). To convert to European Uw (W/m²K), divide by 0.176. So the Northern zone's 0.27 U-factor = 1.53 W/m²K.
ENERGY STAR is a minimum competency threshold — it tells you the worst a window can be and still qualify. A window that just meets the 0.27 Northern zone requirement is still 2x worse than our VEKA Therm-82 Passive (Uw 0.73 W/m²K = 0.13 US U-factor).
2. ENERGY STAR Most Efficient
The EPA's "Most Efficient" designation is a higher tier within ENERGY STAR that recognizes products significantly exceeding the basic threshold. For windows, ENERGY STAR Most Efficient in the Northern zone requires U-factor ≤ 0.17 (approximately Uw 0.97 W/m²K).
Our VEKA Therm-76 (Uw 0.92 W/m²K = 0.16 US U-factor) and VEKA Therm-82 Passive (Uw 0.73 W/m²K = 0.13 US U-factor) both qualify as ENERGY STAR Most Efficient for the Northern zone. This is the designation that qualifies for certain state energy efficiency rebate programs, including Massachusetts' Mass Save program.
3. Passive House: The Global Gold Standard
The Passive House standard (EN/ISO) is fundamentally different from ENERGY STAR. While ENERGY STAR certifies individual products against minimum thresholds, Passive House certifies entire buildings against measured performance outcomes:
- Space heating demand: ≤ 15 kWh/m²/year
- Total primary energy: ≤ 120 kWh/m²/year
- Building airtightness: ≤ 0.6 ACH at 50 Pa
- Thermal comfort: Interior surfaces must stay above 17°C (62°F) in winter
Windows are a component certification within the Passive House system. The Passivhaus Institut (PHI) certifies window components meeting a Uw threshold of 0.80 W/m²K or lower — ensuring the window won't create a "cold wall" effect that would disqualify the building from certification.
Passive House is the most demanding energy performance standard in the built environment. A certified Passive House uses 60–80% less energy than a conventionally built home of equivalent size — and its windows are a critical enabler of that performance.
