A front door makes a statement about a building — and no door makes a more powerful statement than a pivot. Unlike a conventional hinged door that swings from one side, a pivot door rotates on a vertical axis located at the floor and head — typically offset from the door's edge rather than at the frame. The visual effect is dramatic: an oversized panel of glass or solid material that appears to float and rotate in space. This article explains how Schüco's pivot door system achieves this, and what to consider when specifying one for a US home.

1. Pivot vs. Hinged Doors: What's Different

A conventional hinged door carries its weight on side-mounted hinges attached to the door frame. This limits maximum door width (typically 900–1,100mm for a single leaf before the hinge moment becomes unmanageable) and height (2,100–2,400mm for standard residential applications).

A pivot door carries its weight on a floor-fixed pivot point and a head-fixed pivot, distributing the load vertically rather than through side hinges. The load path is more direct and the structural demand on the door frame is simpler. This allows:

  • Widths of 1,200–2,000mm+ (4–6.5 feet) in a single panel
  • Heights up to 3,000mm (9.8 feet) and beyond with appropriate structural detailing
  • Panel weights up to 500kg+ in heavy-duty pivot hardware configurations

The other major difference: a pivot door's axis of rotation is typically offset 100–200mm from the door edge. When open, both sides of the door are visible — the small portion behind the pivot axis swings outward as the main panel swings inward. This counterbalancing effect makes even very heavy doors feel light to operate, and creates the characteristic visual "reveal" on the back side of a pivot door.

2. Center Pivot vs. Offset Pivot

Pivot points are specified at different positions along the door's width:

  • Offset pivot (most common): Pivot axis located 100–200mm from one edge. The bulk of the door swings one direction. Standard for residential entrances — the door feels and operates like a conventional door but with the visual drama of the pivot mechanism.
  • Center pivot: Pivot axis at the midpoint of the door width. Equal panels swing in both directions simultaneously. More dramatic but requires clear space on both interior and exterior sides. Used in double-height lobbies and contemporary feature entrances.
  • Variable offset: Some Schüco configurations allow the pivot point to be positioned at any point along the door width, enabling custom proportion of leading-to-trailing panel ratios.

5. Glazed vs. Solid Panel Options

Pivot doors are available in two primary panel types:

  • Fully glazed: The panel is entirely glass — typically triple-glazed for thermal performance at entry doors, with laminated inner pane for security. This maximizes light transmission into the entrance lobby and creates the most dramatic visual effect, particularly when back-lit at night.
  • Partially or fully solid: The aluminum panel is infilled with insulated composite panels (similar to high-performance entry door construction) with the pivot mechanism integrated into the aluminum frame. Solid panels achieve better U-values at the door leaf level and provide greater privacy. They can be finished in any color or with external cladding materials.
  • Mixed: A glazed section combined with a solid section in a single door leaf — a horizontal or vertical split between glass and panel material. Very common in contemporary architecture for controlled transparency.

6. Structural and Installation Requirements

Pivot doors have specific structural requirements that differ from conventional hinged doors:

  • Floor pivot: The floor pivot carries the full weight of the door panel. This requires a structural floor slab capable of providing solid anchorage for the floor pivot box — concrete slab or appropriate structural framing for wood construction.
  • Head pivot: The head pivot carries lateral forces and stabilizes the door against swinging. The structural header above must be capable of providing a fixed anchor point — typically a steel or LVL header over the opening.
  • Clearance: The trailing section of the door (behind the pivot axis) swings outward as the main panel opens. Interior and exterior space behind the pivot axis must be clear of obstructions for the full rotation arc.
  • Threshold: The floor must be level and continuous through the pivot zone. For exterior entries, we specify a low-threshold detail that drains to the exterior and does not create a trip hazard.
